Why We Prefer the Montezuma Bald Cypress

Which one should I plant?

Montezuma Bald Cypress (Taxodium mucronatum) or Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum

NOTE: You will also see these trees labeled baldcypress.

Often we are asked about Cypress trees; which one is best for our area? How high do they grow, etc? Here at Alvin Tree Farm we recommend the Montezuma Bald Cypress over the Bald Cypress because

  • it has shorter needles
  • stays green longer; turns brown later in the Fall
  • its cones are larger
  • and it has fewer knees

Additionally it is drought resistant, and can be planted along lakes and streams.

The Montezuma Bald Cypress grows into a bigger tree than the Bald Cypress; up to 100′ tall when mature.
